Poetry Contests

The Ina Coolbrith Circle is proud to foster the literary arts through our long-standing poetry competitions, open to members and non-members alike. We encourage poets of all backgrounds to share their work.

Contest guidelines & entry

Contest structure & categories
  • Categories: Past categories have included Poems about California, Journeys, Love, Humor, Nature, People, a specific annual Theme (such as “Magic”), and Poet’s Choice .
  • Entry Limits: Each contestant may submit a total of four (4) poems, with a limit of one (1) poem per category.
  • Judging: To ensure impartial and professional evaluation, all entries are judged by illustrious out-of-state poets.
Awards & recognition
  • Cash Prizes: Each category awards First ($50), Second ($30), and Third ($20) place prizes .
  • Grand Prize: One exceptional poem from among the 1st–3rd place winners is selected for the James Miller Grand Prize Award of $100.
  • Honorable Mentions: Five honorable mention certificates are awarded in each category.
  • Membership Awards: Non-member winners also receive a complimentary one-year membership to the Ina Coolbrith Circle.
Participation fees
  • Members: Participation is free for current Circle members (provided dues were received by the year-end deadline).
  • Non-Members: Non-members may enter at a rate of $8 per poem.
Submission guidelines at a glance

While specific rules may vary slightly each year, standard requirements typically include:

  • Originality: Poems must be original, in English, and previously unpublished in any professional book, journal, newspaper, or online platform.
  • Length: Poems generally should not exceed 42 lines.
  • Format: Submissions must include the poem’s category in the upper right corner.
